Blog 1 Relearning Fractions

Fractions, one part of mathematics that is used in our everyday life. Though used daily, it has proven more difficult for most people, including myself, to grasp it. Going through the education system, I have never been a good student in mathematics, fractions being the most difficult. I struggled a lot with math during my childhood, as I always found math intimidating. However, growing older in education, I am slowly building up my confidence and learning fractions anew and determined to grasp the content.

Relearning fractions proved to be challenging, but I found that using visual aids such as manipulatives, anchor charts and  children's books on fractions helped start me off. It is easier to understand what 1/3 is if you cut a pizza into three equal parts, cut into four equal parts and get 1/4, as so on. Being determined to be a better teacher in fractions and provide a better learning experience to my future students, I am doing my best to find the most fun way of learning fractions and pass that onto my students.

 1. Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.
